James
Atticus Bowden for Congress
Well,
it's been just over a week since I explained my
criteria for endorsing a candidate to
replace Jo Ann Davis. We've been blessed with
several good candidates in the 1st District, but
one has placed himself above all others as the
best choice: James
Atticus Bowden.
I did not expect the choice to be as easy as it
was. It helped that only a few candidates even
bothered to provide a detailed response to my
inquiry. Most either didn't respond at all or
referred me to their press releases and/or
websites, none of which mentioned my primary
focus: Communist China. As such, the first cut
wiped out all but two candidates.
As it happened, both candidates who were left
expressed good views on Communist China, the
Wahhabist-Ba'athist-Khomeinist War, taxes, and
life issues. However, only one candidate
volunteered this:
If the
PRC attacks Taiwan- then our defense agreement
should be honored. The defense of Taiwan from
armed attack is worth a war with China.
That
statement is as bold as it is necessary. Taiwan
has been the red-headed stepchild of
international diplomacy for decades. The
Communist regime has spent much treasure (and is
more than ready to shed blood when the
time is right) to swallow up the
island democracy and snuff out the light of
liberty that Taiwan has become. Yet hardly anyone
in American officialdom is willing to come to
grips with that fact.
James Atticus Bowden is, and that is why he has
earned my support.
I should mention, of course, that he was one of
the leaders against the Hampton Roads sales tax
referendum in 2002, and was one of the very few
who called out the transportation
tax hike of 2007 for what it really was.
All of the Republican candidates are head and
shoulders above the would-be Democrat nominees,
but when it comes to the best person for the job,
the choice is clear.
I support James
Atticus Bowden, and come next Saturday
- barring an unforeseen event that prevents my
appearance - I will work and vote for him at the
1st District Convention (at Caroline County High School).

James
Atticus Bowden is running for the Republican
nomination for the First District U.S.
Congressional seat made vacant by the untimely
death of Jo Ann Davis. The nomination will be
decided by a convention on November 10.
Jim
Bowden is one of those individuals who
conservatives WISH would represent them in the
halls of government - as opposed to those we
usually get who simply march under the
ideological banner. This is a truly unique
opportunity to get someone in office who really
believes, and lives by, the tenets we see
exemplified so rarely in public life.
I have
corresponded with him a number of times via the
blogs and had the honor of spending over an hour
talking with him at the bloggers' conference this
past summer.
I told
Jim that I heartily endorsed his candidacy the
second I heard about it.
The catch
is, he needs delegates from the First District to
show up on November 10 (he also needs money, but
the delegates he cannot do without.)
Please go
learn all about Jim at his excellent
campaign Web site.
Especially see the series of
videos
If
you know anyone who lives in the First District
(extends from Newport News to Fredericksburg -
use this link - fill
out the form, and see if it says "Congress:
Jo Ann Davis" near the bottom) have them
e-mail their legal name, address, best telephone
and email address to jatticus1@yahoo.com.

To the board of Citizens
for a Fort Monroe National Park, and also to a
number of bcc's:
Jim Bowden is a conservative
Christian from Poquoson who did a career in the
Army followed by extensive public service in the
Republican Party and as a writer and columnist in
various Virginia publications, print and online.
It appears that Jim is about to announce for the
congressional seat of the late Rep. Davis.
Here is Jims succinct,
unambiguous position on Fort Monroe (the subject,
by the way, of a superb half-hour documentary
next week on Channel 15):
Fort Monroe.
Bowden supports preserving this national treasure
as a national park, where citizens live, work and
play while protecting what is important
like the Presidio of California. Fort
Monroe shouldnt become the piggy bank for
local special interests.
Now, Im certainly no
Republican, and my own kind of conservatism
doesnt always match Jims. But my dad
is a Republican, and heres what I plan to
tell my dad if Jim gets to the point where
fundraising is crucial: If a Republican wants to
back the real thing, Jim is it. This guy
absolutely, without a doubt, wants to be a
politician to do things that he believes are
right, and not just to be a politician. From me,
for what its worth, theres no higher
praise for a politician.
However, what Jim will be needing
in the coming weeks is probably not funding.
Its active, stand-up support from citizens
in the First Congressional District, which
stretches from Newport News to above
Fredericksburg. Therell be a Republican
nominating convention just after election day,
probably in a high school gym, and Jim will need
for supporters simply to show up and back him.
This will require the investment of a chunk of a
Saturday.
If you want to know more, or if
you want to help him, or if you know
people in the first district who can help him by
standing up for him, please either
contact me for more information or act on
something Jim has said:
If you want to
help Jim earn the Republican nomination for
Congress on November 10 or 17, please send an
email with your name, address, best telephone and
email to

Congressman James Atticus Bowden?
West Point graduate ... military veteran ...
author ... conservative leader ... grassroots
activist ... 1st District Chairman ... Bacon's
Rebellion contributor....
Jim posted at Deo
Vindice this week that he was resigning
as 1st District Chairman. He wrote: I resign
because I am seriously considering running as a
candidate for the Republican nomination for U.S.
House of Representatives, First District
Virginia.
Jim is a friend, a mentor, and
someone I greatly respect. He would serve the
people of the 1st District well as their
representative in D.C.
Bacon's Rebellion has some
reflective thoughts here.

Excerpts
From The Posting
The tragic passing of the
late Representative Jo Ann Davis has set off a
scramble in Virginias First Congressional
District. This district strongly trends GOP, and
it is a safe thought to say the next
representative, to be elected in a special
election (date TBA) will be from the GOP. Many
have voiced an interest in running, including
Mrs. Daviss widower, Chuck Davis.
As we survey the field, I
find once again that it is amazing what ambition
will drive men to do, and at the same time am
almost awed what honor will drive other men to
do.
Now, back in the First
District there is a gentleman named James Atticus
Bowden (JAB). Bowden is a long time resident of
the First, a top rank blogger, and until recently
was the Chairman of the First District GOP
Committee. He is considering running for the Va-1
GOP nomination. Only considering. There is
nothing preventing him from running for the
nomination while keeping his party position.
After all, its only a special election,
right? Nothing in Virginia law or the RPV rules
that prevent him from being a candidate and
keeping his position.
Nothing save honor.
Bowden has resigned his
position as Chairman. His letter says, in part:
I am resigning
because I consider Party office a public and
personal trust. Some of what I must do as a Party
Official is governed by the Code of Virginia,
thus, I serve our Rule of Law - which is the key
aspect of the public trust. There is also an
associational trust from the rank and file
members - all members of the RPV who live in the
First District. And, there is a personal trust
which you established with me when you elected me
on September 21st.
I believe that my
public trust is significantly less than the
legal, ethical and moral responsibilities of any
elected official from cities and counties on up
succeeding levels of government. Yet, elected
political office remains a trust - a duty - not a
position and not a job.
Consequently, I
find, for myself, the seeking of an elected
public office while holding on to an elected
party office to return to if I fail to earn the
nomination for the House of Representatives,
First District Virginia to be unseemly. I choose
not to do so.
Appropriate language for a
man who shares a middle name with Atticus Finch,
the hero of To Kill a Mockingbird.
I proudly state that I am
a longtime JAB fan. His blog writing is
meticulous, his reasoning always logical and
sound, and his sense of honor and what is
appropriate always on point. How many of us, no
matter how honorable, would do this? How many
political figures would surrender a ranking party
position when they did not have to? Some might do
it, but only after a careful calculation of the
political pros and cons. For Brother Bowden, I
dont think it was ever a choice-I think it
was a moral imperative, part and parcel of his
character, as natural and essential as breathing.
Untrammelled honor is as
glorious as unbridled ambition is ugly.
"I do not live in
Va-1, and watch this only as a political junkie
from afar. I am sure others will run,
but the voters of Va-1 could do much worse than
to get behind Bowden."
Top drawer, or bottom of
the barrel. Its a matter of respect,
its a matter of courage, its a matter
of discretion
but most of all its a
matter of honor.
Update: A little
bird pinged me after seeing this and noted that
unbeknownst to most of us officials in this
situation do have to step down. The thing that
impressed him about JAB was that JAB stepped down
without knowing the requirement
existed
which to me underscored his
admirable conduct. Lets face it
JAB
could have done his work and then
resigned/announced at the last second, which
would have met the letter of the law. But the
truly honorable follow both the letter and spirit
of the law.
